Three Japanese hostages being held in Iraq have been freed unharmed, the Japanese Foreign Ministry confirmed today. But any relief over their release was cut short as it emerged that two more Japanese citizens have been kidnapped.
The three freed hostages, Noriaki Imai, 18, Nahoko Takato, 34, both aid workers, and Soichiro Koriyama, 32, a photojournalist, are in good health after being turning over to Muslim clerics in Baghdad earlier today. They were shown sitting on sofas in a Baghdad office on the Arab satellite channel, al-Jazeera. One of the hostages, who was in tears, was being comforted by a cleric and others.
